Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria’s war memorial and a Melbourne symbol. It debuted in 1934 to honor WWI heroes and currently honors all Australian veterans. In the elegant monument’s Sanctuary, where the distinctive Ray of Light illuminates the commemorative stone every half hour, visitors can find peaceful introspection (Remembrance Day). The Galleries of Remembrance display nearly 800 artworks, historical artifacts (including an original Gallipoli landing craft), and personal possessions from the 1850s to now. The Balcony overlooks the 13-hectare Reserve and Second World Memorial Forecourt, where the Eternal Flame has burnt since 1954. Buglers, bagpipers, and Shrine Guard in traditional uniform perform The Last Post Service every Sunday at 4:45pm.
